DWLI Vol. 4

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 24, 2008, 1:31 PM
Moving on to the next category Traditional Art> Drawings> Macabre and Horror.

This first deviant has some really nice pen & ink work; reminds me of some of the artists for Palladium Books. Check his stuff here:
:iconkallus:

Crazy crazy stuff, this guy's. More nice inkwork and some very different materials (at least for me): Ink, Wine, Tea, Mustard, Coffee, Ash, Soot, Marker
on Card Paper. Those materials were used in a series, he has some other work that's very nice too, but those pieces in particular appealed to me.
:iconeddietheyeti:

Not that I have a problem with pen and ink, but it seems like the best deviants in this category are all pen and ink guys. But, horror tends to lend itself to b/w. Red's the main color you might need; everything else isn't really necessary. So, yeah, another awesome pen and inker, panshadow.
:iconpanshadow:

Okay, here's a little variety. Primarily zombie artwork, but using different media. Some nice skillz employed here.
:iconzeta2000:

A nifty lil' group devoted to artwork about the Cthulhu Mythos. Some nice watercolor and b/w work. Frohickey is a particular fave of mine.
:iconpickmans-model:

That's all for now.

Guillermo del Toro's doing The Mountains of Madness? How did I miss this? And I'll have ot look at that Call of Cthulhu. There was a game of Cthulhu, I think it was a PC game, that was supposed to be very true to the original story; I can't verify that never having played it, but I'm intrigued by that claim, nonetheless. And you're welcome.

My first impulse is to say,"There aren't any." (good ones, I mean) Everyone who tries to do an adaptation immediately starts screwing around with the plot, updating the story to modern times (to save a buck) and throw in some screaming teenagers to sell it to the adolescent market. Afterwards, the thing isn't recognizable as a Lovecraft story except that there is a "Necronomicon" in there somewhere and the bad guy's name is "Whately." In my opinion, Lovecraft only works if it is presented as it was written. Sure it can be cut down in length and excess verbage but the story and the protagonists have to be as they were originally made. Of course, studio execs want profits, not points for accuracy; and they won't greenlight a project unless the maximum dollar payback is calculated. Teenagers with loads of disposable income won't go to a horror movie only cast with ugly old men and bookish nerds with no hot chicks to speak of. So, unless del Toro's "Mountains of Madness" is done without studio interference, we won't see any Lovecraft movies that really express what Lovecraft intended. The only exception I will make is the silent version of "Call of Cthulhu" produced by The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. [link]
This is a true rendition of the story, done as a silent film and is really well done. They are in the process of creating another film (with sound this time) of "The Whisperer in Darkness." You can see the trailer on the society's website.
Anyway, enough of my ranting. I may have read more of Lumley's work; I'll have to see what I have here to remind me.
Thank you for asking, BTW. :D

What's the best adaptation of Lovecraft you've seen (moviewise, I mean)?

And have you only read Lumley's Cthulhu books or any of his other work?

I've read some Lumley, but I guess I'm kind of a purist. I stick to the source and don't wander too far from the well. (the same well that was tainted by the unearthly alien colour that drained the life out of an entire family and the surrounding countryside.) :(

Your welcome. You've got some spiffy stuff on your site. Have you ever read Brian Lumley, considering you're a Lovecraft fan?

Hey john, thanks a lot for those kind words on your journal!

I'm not in video game industry yet, I've worked for a couple of independent games, but nothing more than that.

Still, I look forward to work on the big companies, like blizzard or wizards of the coast
